Question
Exercise One:
Report Example: Read the following report and then answer
the questions below.
In the following scenario, you are a police officer
responding to a disturbance call at a residential
home.
At 1835 hours, I was dispatched to 3445 Redbird Dr regarding
a burglary. The reporting person
is Robert D. Madison, the homeowner. I arrived at 1855
hours. Upon arrival, I met with Mr.
Madison. He explained to me that while he was at work,
during the day, someone had broken
into his house. I asked him if he knew how his home had been
entered. Mr. Madison showed me
his back door and door jamb, which was broken. There was a
large boot or shoe print on the
door, near the lock area.
Mr. Madison said he left his home around 0745 hours for
work, and did not return home until
approximate-ly 1830 hours. His wife is working out of town
and his son is away at college. Mr.
Madison stated that he is missing a Sony laptop computer, a
32” Samsung flat screen TV, a
Samsung DVD player, 4 antique watches that were on a
fireplace mantel, about $300 in cash and
his wife’s jewelry box. Jewelry is missing as well. The
owner will provide a list of the jewelry
once he talks to the insurance company that has a list of
the jewelry. A neighbor walked over to
speak to Mr. Madison and said that she saw someone at the
house earlier in the day, but did not
see them break in. I spoke with the neighbor, Ms. Danielson,
who lives directly across the street
from Mr. Madison’s home and has a clear view of the victim’s
home and drive. Ms. Danielson
said that she was sitting in her living room talking to her
sister on the phone at approximately
1430 hours. She said that she saw a white van pull into the
driveway of Mr. Madison’s home and
watched two men get out and go around to the back of the
house. They were both in their early
twenties, and dressed in dark blue or black coveralls. One
was a white male, the other was a
black male. The van had a sign on the side that said “Joe’s
Plumbing.” Ms. Danielson got up to
let her dog in from the back yard, and a few minutes later
when she came back to the living
room, the van was gone. She thought it was odd that they
were only there a few minutes, but
didn’t think much about it until she saw the police car. She
cannot provide any further details
about the suspects or the van.
